Remote Control Plane Fighter Jet
What it's for
Most foam RC planes get thrown into the air by an adult and land thirty seconds later. This one can do that too, but it can also sit on its wheels, build speed along a flat surface and climb away under its own power, which is a considerably better moment to be standing next to.
It is quick enough to fly proper circuits rather than short hops, with the built-in gyroscope helping to keep everything settled between your inputs. That is the difference between a remote control plane that comes out twice and one that comes out every dry weekend.
How it works
Charge the aircraft battery using the supplied USB cable, fit two AA batteries into the controller and the RC aircraft is ready to fly.
Two propellers sit on top of the wings and turn in opposite directions, cancelling out the twisting force each one would create on its own. Control is two-channel: the throttle sets speed and climb, while steering works by driving one propeller harder than the other so the aircraft turns towards the slower side. There are no moving control surfaces like a conventional model aircraft, so there is less to bend, jam or adjust after an awkward landing. A 3-axis gyroscope runs in the background and holds the aircraft level between inputs, making a fast radio controlled plane much easier to manage.
Designed for everyday use
The fuselage is moulded from lightweight EPP foam, with ABS propellers. EPP foam compresses on impact and springs back rather than cracking, which matters given how most flights end while you are still learning.
At 34.2cm long with a 24.8cm wingspan, the aircraft is large enough to follow comfortably against the sky while remaining light enough for a child to carry to the flying spot.
Storage & space
The propellers and landing gear fit before the first flight and stay on afterwards, so the aircraft stores flat on a shelf or back in its box between sessions.
Ground take-offs need a flat hard surface such as a path, tennis court or quiet car park, since the wheels are too small to roll through grass. If a suitable runway is not available, the plane can also be launched by hand. Once airborne, it needs open sky well away from roads, trees, buildings and overhead cables, ideally on a calm day. A large park with a paved path running through it gives you both options.
