Some races are won by outright speed. The best slot car races are won by knowing when not to use it.

This five metre circuit asks two drivers to balance pace against control. Charge into a corner too quickly and the car leaves the slot. Judge the same bend properly and you'll carry that speed onto the next straight, pulling clear of your rival.

Siblings settling a rivalry, parents taking on the children, friends chasing each other's fastest lap — every race is another chance to get it right.

Two players are ready from the moment the track is built, which brings everyone into the same room around the same game rather than taking turns on a screen. Sessions rarely end after one race.

How it works

The track sections clip together into a flowing figure-of-eight layout, with sweeping bends, long straights and an elevated crossover bridge.

Each player drives a car using their own trigger controller. Build speed down the straights, then ease off before the bends to hold the racing line. Push too hard and the car leaves the slot. Get the balance right and you'll carry that momentum through the corner and onto the next straight.

A magnet sits in the chassis of each car, between the rails. It pulls the car down toward the steel track, which holds the guide pin in the slot through faster cornering than an unweighted car would manage. The car can still be pushed past what the magnet will hold, so the balance between throttle and grip is still yours to judge.

Power reaches the motor through two copper braids on the underside of each car, which run along the rails as the car moves. The braids are replaceable and ten spares are supplied with the set, so a car that has lost contact after heavy use can be brought back into service rather than retired.

The straights invite full throttle while the tighter corners test reactions and timing. LED headlights follow each car around the circuit, so it's easy to read the positions at speed.

Designed for repeat play

The powered track and the magnet in each chassis reward smoother driving rather than harder driving. The fastest laps come from learning where to lift off, how much speed a corner will take and which line through the figure-of-eight is quickest, not from holding the trigger down.

That progression is what keeps the set coming back out of the cupboard long after the first afternoon. It holds the attention of adults as readily as children, which makes it a straightforward choice for birthdays, wet weekends and family game nights.

Storage & space

Assembled, the circuit occupies roughly 1.46m × 0.81m. A clear section of floor, or a room with the furniture pushed back, will take it comfortably. A flat, level indoor surface gives the most reliable running, as any dip in the floor can lift a car out of the slot on the faster sections.

The set runs from the mains, so the circuit needs to sit within reach of a socket. Position the powered section on the side of the layout nearest the outlet before clipping the rest of the track together.

The layout breaks back down into its individual track sections, so the whole set returns to its box between races and stores on a shelf or in a cupboard.
