RC Toy Buying Guide: What 1:10, 2.4GHz, 4WD and Other RC Terms Really Mean

A plain-English guide to the numbers on the box and what they change about how a toy drives

Two remote control cars sit side by side on a shelf. Similar size, similar price, similar picture on the box. One of them will be brilliant. The other will be in a cupboard by February.

The difference is usually printed on the box already, in a row of numbers and abbreviations that mean a great deal to people who already know what they mean and nothing at all to everyone else. 1:10. 2.4GHz. 4WD. 2-channel. Proportional.

This guide takes each one in turn and explains what it does, what it changes about the way the toy behaves, and whether it is worth paying more for. We are Fun & Sport, a UK retailer selling active toys and fitness equipment, and these are the specifications we check before we stock anything.

What does 1:10 scale mean?

Scale is a ratio. It describes how big the model is compared with a real vehicle. At 1:10, the model is one tenth the size of the real thing. At 1:18, it is one eighteenth, so it is smaller.

The lower the second number, the bigger the toy:

  • 1:10 scale is around 40 to 50 cm long
  • 1:14 scale is around 30 to 35 cm long
  • 1:18 scale is around 25 to 30 cm long
  • 1:24 scale and below is pocket-sized

The step from 1:24 up to 1:10 is bigger than the numbers make it sound, and it changes what ground the toy can cover as much as how it looks.

Size changes more than appearance. A larger car has bigger wheels and a longer wheelbase, so it rides over small bumps and cracks that would stop a smaller model dead. It is easier to see at a distance, which matters when it is thirty metres away across a car park. And fine detail is easier to mould at larger sizes, so bigger models tend to look more like real cars.

Scale is not a measure of quality. A well-made 1:18 car can outperform a poorly made 1:10 car on everything that matters, and smaller scales cost less, fit in a bag and suit indoor use where a 1:10 car would be a hazard. Scale tells you how big the model is, not how fast or how well built.

What is 2.4GHz and why does it matter?

This is the term most people skip, and it is the one most likely to ruin a Christmas morning. Older remote control toys used fixed radio frequencies, often labelled 27MHz or 40MHz. Each toy was locked to one frequency. If two toys on the same frequency were switched on near each other, the controllers fought over both cars and neither one drove properly. Buying two identical cars for two children was a genuine gamble.

2.4GHz radio works differently. When the controller and the toy are switched on, they pair with each other and hop across the band together, ignoring everything else. Several cars can run in the same space at once, each answering only to its own controller.

2.4GHz also carries further and holds the connection more reliably, which is why almost every modern remote control toy uses it.

Home Wi-Fi uses the same 2.4GHz band, which sounds like a problem and is not one in practice. The two are designed to share the space, and a router will not stop a car working. A busy band can shave a little off the usable range at a distance, which is one of several reasons real-world range falls short of the figure on the box.

All of which matters most when buying two toys for two children. Check that both are 2.4GHz before anything else, because it is the specification that decides whether they can play together or have to take turns. It is normally printed on the box near the scale and channel count, or listed in the specifications on the product page. Where no frequency is given at all, assume the older type.

What do 2-channel, 4-channel and 6-channel mean?

A channel is one independent control. Channel one is usually throttle, running forward and backward along a single axis. Channel two is usually steering, running left and right along another. Two channels, four directions. This is where buyers trip up, because a 2-channel car plainly does four things.

Count the controls, not the directions.

  • 2-channel covers driving. Throttle and steering. This is what almost every remote control car uses, and it is all a car needs.
  • 4-channel adds two more controls on top. On a tank that might be a rotating turret and a firing action. On a stunt car it might be a flip function and a light switch.
  • 6-channel and above appears on machines with genuinely separate moving parts. An excavator needs to drive, slew the cab, raise the boom, extend the arm and curl the bucket, and each of those wants its own channel.

Two channels do not always mean throttle and steering. Some stunt models spend the second channel on a spin or flip function instead, so the toy drives forward and changes direction by turning on the spot rather than curving through a bend. That suits younger children, who often find a spin easier to time than a steered corner. It is the clearest case for the rule above: check what the two channels do, rather than assuming one of them is steering.

More channels are not better in the abstract. They are better when the toy has more things to do. A 6-channel car would leave four controls doing nothing.

What is the difference between 2WD and 4WD?

Two-wheel drive sends power to one pair of wheels. Four-wheel drive sends it to all four.

Neither is better outright. For a car that will mostly live outdoors and be driven hard, 4WD earns its cost. For indoor use, or for a drift car where sliding is the point, 2WD is the sensible choice.

What is the difference between a brushed and a brushless motor?

A brushed motor uses small carbon contacts to feed power to the spinning part of the motor. A brushless motor does the same job electronically, with nothing touching and nothing to wear out. Brushless runs cooler, wastes less energy as heat and gives more speed from the same battery.

Almost every toy-grade vehicle is brushed, and for most family use that is the sensible choice, with the price difference better spent on scale or drive system. Brushless costs considerably more and earns it when a toy is driven hard and often, by someone who has outgrown their first car.

What is proportional control?

Two cars can have identical top speeds and feel completely different to drive. This is usually why.

A non-proportional control is a switch. Full power or nothing, full lock or straight ahead, with nothing in between. A proportional control reads how far the trigger is squeezed and gives that much power, so the car can creep, hold a steady cruise or go flat out. Proportional steering does the same for the wheel, allowing a gentle curve rather than only a hard turn.

The practical difference is control. Non-proportional cars are driven in bursts and tend to spin out under their own power, because every start is a full-throttle start. Proportional cars can be placed. A child can hold a line through a corner, slow down for a gap and speed up out of it.

Many toys are proportional on the throttle and non-proportional on the steering, which is a reasonable middle ground. Full proportional steering and throttle are more common on hobby-grade models, though better toy-grade cars increasingly offer both, and it is worth paying for if the toy is going to be driven seriously. What does a 30 metre control range mean in practice?

Range figures are measured in clear line of sight, which means nothing solid between the controller and the toy. A stated 30 metres is 30 metres across an empty car park.

Real range is shorter. Walls, fences, parked cars and hedges absorb the signal, and distance around a corner counts for more than distance in a straight line. This matters less than it sounds, though. Thirty metres is already further than most children will let a car get away from them.

How long do RC toys run on a charge?

Twenty to thirty minutes of driving from a full charge is normal for a larger remote control car, with a charge time of two to four hours. That is roughly the length of a decent session before attention moves on to something else, which is why most models land in it. Smaller models run for less, and usually charge faster.

The two numbers only mean something together. A toy advertising a twenty-minute charge sounds excellent until you find it gives five minutes of driving. Look at the ratio, and at whether the run time is long enough to be worth going outside for.

Stated run times assume steady driving. Full throttle, rough ground and cold weather all shorten them.

What kind of batteries do RC toys use?

A few arrangements are common, and they have very different running costs.

Disposable AAs are cheap to buy and expensive over a year. Rechargeable packs are the standard on larger models, and the chemistry varies: Li-ion holds charge well sitting on a shelf, while NiMH and Ni-Cd drain slowly when unused, so a car left for a month wants topping up before it goes out. LiPo packs are hobby-grade and need charging with the correct charger, following the manufacturer's instructions.

Whichever it is, one detail is worth checking on the listing: whether the pack is removable or sealed into the toy. A removable pack can be charged separately, and can be replaced years later when it stops holding charge. A sealed pack means the toy has a fixed lifespan.

Note that many rechargeable toys still need ordinary batteries in the controller. It is a common gap on Christmas morning.

Does this apply to RC boats, helicopters and planes?

All of it does, but the weighting changes with what is being controlled.

  • Cars and buggies. Scale, drive system and proportional control matter most
  • Boats. Run time matters most, because a boat that stops mid-pond has to be retrieved rather than walked to
  • Helicopters and planes. Channel count decides everything, and fewer channels are far easier to learn on
  • Excavators, cranes and animals. Channel count again, because every separate moving part needs its own control

Specifications decide how a toy drives. They do not decide whether it keeps getting picked up months later, which comes down to something else entirely. We look at that in why good toys keep children moving.

FAQs

Is a more expensive RC toy always better?

Not always, but the things that cost money tend to be the things that matter. Proportional control, four-wheel drive, a decent battery and a larger scale all change how the toy behaves. Lights and sound effects work differently: they do nothing for performance but a great deal for how much fun the thing is, which is what brings a child back to it a fifth time. Judge the specifications on how the toy drives and the extras on whether they will keep it in use.

What age is right for a first remote control car?

Age markings on the box are the guide to follow, and they vary by model rather than by category. Beyond the marking, the practical question is whether a child can hold a controller steady and watch a moving object at a distance at the same time. Proportional control helps here, because it forgives a heavy hand.

Can remote control toys be used in the rain?

Assume not unless the listing specifically says otherwise. Most toy-grade models have open electronics and exposed motors. Wet ground also costs grip, so even a waterproofed model drives poorly in the rain.

Every one of these numbers is really answering the same question: how much of the driving does the child get to do? That is the difference between a toy that gets used and a toy that gets outgrown by February.
